MUSCAT – L’Oman ha concesso asilo ad alcuni membri della famiglia di Muammar Gheddafi, due dei quali sono ricercati dall’Interpol, ha dichiarato lunedì un funzionario dell’Oman.

L’Algeria ha detto la settimana scorsa che la vedova del leader libico e tre dei suoi figli avevano lasciato il suo territorio molto tempo fa, senza dire dove sarebbero andati. I membri della famiglia di Gheddafi avevano cercato rifugio in Algeria nel 2011, dopo che i ribelli libici raggiunsero la capitale Tripoli, durante la rivolta armata che pose fine ai loro 42 anni di governo.
“La moglie di Gheddafi, due figli e una figlia, così come i loro figli sono in Oman dal mese di ottobre dello scorso anno,” lo ha riferito un funzionario del governo dell’Oman, parlando a condizione di rimanere anonimo.
“Abbiamo già accettato la loro richiesta di asilo a condizione che non si impegnino in attività politiche“, ha aggiunto il funzionario.
Il funzionario dell’Oman ha detto che a parte Safia, vedova di Gheddafi, sua figlia Aisha e i figli Hannibal e Mohammed sono tra coloro che hanno avuto diritto d’asilo.
Aisha e Hannibal sono ricercati dall’Interpol a seguito di una richiesta delle autorità libiche, ma non vi è alcun mandato internazionale per Mohammed o Safia.
Il quotidiano locale Al-Shabiba dell’Oman ha riportato lunedì che alcuni membri della famiglia Gheddafi erano in Oman dal mese di ottobre. Ha citato un funzionario del Ministero degli Esteri che affermava che lo stato del Golfo non voleva “mettersi in mostra” con un’azione richiesta per motivi “umanitari“.
Ministro degli Esteri libico, Mohamed Abdelaziz, ha confermato in Qatar che alcuni membri della famiglia Gheddafi sono passati dall’Algeria in Oman, dicendo che un annuncio ufficiale, da parte dei tre paesi, sarebbe stato rilasciato in seguito.
“L’Oman è un paese sovrano e ha il diritto, come altri paesi, di ricevere i richiedenti asilo e i membri dell’opposizione politica,” ha detto ai giornalisti Abdelaziz, a Doha in vista di un vertice arabo convocato per martedì.
“Tutto quello che chiediamo ai paesi che ospitano queste persone, siano esse la famiglia o sostenitori del vecchio regime … di non essere un fattore negativo per il percorso della rivoluzione“, ha aggiunto.
Alla domanda se la Libia avrebbe richiesto la loro estradizione, ha detto: “E ‘troppo presto per parlare di questo.“
Il figlio di Gheddafi Saif al-Islam, catturato dai ribelli più di un anno fa, è comparso in un tribunale libico per la prima volta nel mese di gennaio. La Libia vuole processare lui e altri ex funzionari dell’era Gheddafi, anche se Saif al-Islam è stato accusato di crimini contro l’umanità dal Tribunale Penale Internazionale.
Un altro dei figli di Gheddafi, Saadi, è fuggito in Niger, alla fine della rivolta durante la quale fu sconfitto e ucciso suo padre.
Tre dei figli di Gheddafi, Mutassim, Seif al-Arab e Khamis, sono stati uccisi durante il conflitto in incidenti separati. Gheddafi stesso è stato ucciso nella sua città natale, Sirte, nel mese di ottobre 2011.

MUSCAT – Oman has granted asylum to some members of Muammar Gathafi’s family, two of whom are wanted by Interpol, an Omani official said on Monday.
The move comes in coordination with the Libyan government and the Algerian government following a pledge by the Gathafi family that they will not use Oman as a base for political or media activity.
Algeria said last week that the widow of the late Libyan leader and three of his children had left its territory long ago, without saying where they had gone.
Members of Gathafi family had sought refuge in Algeria in 2011 after Libyan rebels reached the capital Tripoli during the armed uprising that ended his 42-year rule.
“Gathafi’s wife, two sons and a daughter, as well as their children have been in Oman since October last year,” an Omani government official said on condition of anonymity.
“We have already accepted their request for asylum provided they don’t engage in political activities,” the official added.
The Omani official said that apart from Gathafi’s widow Safia, his daughter Aisha and sons Mohammed and Hannibal were among those granted asylum.
Aisha and Hannibal are wanted by Interpol following a request from the Libyan authorities, but there is no international warrant for Mohammed or Safia.
Omani local daily Al-Shabiba said on Monday that some members of Gathafi’s family have been in Oman since October.
It cited a foreign ministry official saying that the Gulf state did not want to “show off” with an action prompted by “humanitarian” motives.
Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed Abdelaziz confirmed in Qatar that some members of Gathafi’s family have moved from Algeria to Oman, saying an official announcement by the three countries was due to be issued later.
“Oman is a sovereign country and has the right, just like other countries, to receive asylum seekers and members of the political opposition,” Abdelaziz told journalists in Doha ahead of an Arab summit due to convene on Tuesday.
“All we ask of the countries that host these, be it the family or supporters of the former regime … not to be a negative factor in the path of the revolution,” he added.
Asked if Libya would demand their extradition, he said: “It is too soon to talk about this.”
Gathafi’s son Saif al-Islam, captured by rebels more than a year ago, appeared in a Libyan court for the first time in January. Libya wants to try him and other former Gathafi-era officials itself, although Saif al-Islam has been indicted for crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court.
Another of Gathafi’s sons, Saadi, fled to Niger at the end of the revolt in which his father was overthrown and killed.
Three of Gathafi’s sons, Mutassim, Seif al-Arab and Khamis, were killed during the conflict in separate incidents.
Gathafi himself was killed in his hometown of Sirte in October 2011.
